Capital Campaign
RAISE THE BARN
We are embarking on an estimated $12 million-dollar capital campaign to build the first Steamboat Sports Barn. The outdoor sports fields in Steamboat Springs are covered with snow from November - April (six months of the year) making year-round activities impossible. The Barn will provide our club sports organizations an affordable and essential facility in which they can offer their respective recreational and competitive programs year-round.
Additionally, the Barn will ease the strain on the existing facilities in our community, as all current youth sports organizations are competing for those facilities’ limited court and field time. Each Club will have a financial agreement with the SSB that outlines specific dedicated field playing time that will include an hourly fee for use to contribute toward field maintenance and management. The Sports Barn has the potential to directly benefit over 1500 local youth and adults.
Why Now
The Steamboat Springs School Board recently broke ground on construction of the new Sleeping Giant School in the scheduled for 2021 opening. Now that district plans and funding are confirmed, we strongly believe now is the time to build an indoor sports complex in Steamboat.
Project Details
The 45,000 square foot Sports Barn will include:
One indoor turf soccer field that meets FIFA and US Soccer recommendations for 7 vs 7 play standards. This turf will also be used for lacrosse.
One indoor hard surface court for basketball and
volleyball.
Necessary building operational requirements.
Immediate benefits to local sports groups
The Barn will have the ability to host a variety of turf and court programs, that include league play, tournaments, team practices, camps and clinics in multiple sports.
Steamboat Soccer Club -750 average annual members
High Altitude Basketball - 350 average annual members
Steamboat Youth Lacrosse - 150 average annual members
Whiteout Volleyball - 100 average annual members
City of Steamboat Springs adult leagues (kickball, soccer, volleyball, basketball) - 150 average annual members.
Potential Local Community User Groups
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, in the 30-year time span between 2000 and 2030, Routt County’s population is projected to grow by 73% — from 20,102 residents to 34,842. As we anticipate substantial growth, we believe the Sports Barn will meet the immediate needs of the community as well as set up current programs for long-term success.
Local community programming need: During the summer the local sports leagues utilize outdoor fields leaving the Barn space available for community programming needs: City Summer camps, Boys & Girls Club groups, etc.
Driving economic success and vitality
All of the immediate local user groups mentioned above host annual tournaments and summer camps and believe with the indoor Sports Barn there will be undoubtable opportunities to increase current tournaments and summer camps as well as create new ones that will increase tourism.
Our goal is to be the region's prominent multi-purpose indoor sports’ facility that will make a considerable impact in the tourism market. Tourists will be drawn in the spring and fall which will help build a steady revenue for the City during what is usually a slower time. The Steamboat Springs Chamber of Commerce states that the average visitor spends $250 a day: $75 per diem for food and retail and an average room night/lodging ($175 per night). The Sports Barn initially has the conservative estimate of hosting one camp per week per month/average 100 individuals per camp. Tourism revenue into local economy per camp = $45,000 per week-long camp/12 camps per year = (75 per day *100 campers) *5 days (12 week-long camps per year @ 5 days/nights).
There is potential for up to $540,000 in annual additional tourism generated revenue in Steamboat Springs. * projections and data from June 2020.
