Frequently Asked Questions
What is the sports barn?
The Steamboat Sports Barn will be the only indoor sports complex in the Yampa Valley. It will have both courts and turf fields and will serve youth and adults in our community.
Why do we need an indoor sports complex?
Outdoor sports fields in Steamboat are covered with snow Nov - April making year-round activities impossible. Currently, all sports organizations are competing for limited facilities and the Sports Barn will ease the strain on existing facilities.
Why is now a good time to build the Sports Barn?
The Steamboat Springs School Board recently broke ground on the construction of the new Sleeping Giant School scheduled for 2021 opening.
Also, between 2000-2030, Routt County’s population is projected to grow by 73% -- from 20,102 residents to 34,842. The Sports Barn will meet immediate needs of our community and set up programs for long-term success.
How will this benefit our community?
The Sports Barn will immediately benefit 1500+ local youth and adults. It will also stimulate and benefit the economy including the lodging industry, restaurant and retail industries, and overall tourism market. There is potential for up to $540,000 in annual additional tourism generated revenue in Steamboat Springs.
More importantly, youth sports create safe and healthy opportunities for youth in our community to gather and learn leadership skills, dedication, and work ethic. Studies show that youth involved in sports are more likely to become leaders and care about other individuals through the teamwork skills they have learned.
In addition - the Sports Barn will be a more cost effective way for organizations to rent practice space. This will lower the cost of participation for these activities, allowing more families to participate who otherwise could not afford it.
Who is involved in creating the Sports Barn?
The Sports Barn is a community collaboration that currently consists of the Steamboat Soccer Club, High Altitude Basketball, and Whiteout Volleyball Club. We are working with local businesses and partners as we go through this process.
